This brilliantly emotive, and wholly impassioned new recording opens on the rhythmic finger snapper Bring It On and the simply sumptuous Swing It for the Maestro and they are in turn backed seamlessly by the gentle dance floor swirls and twirls of Wes 101, the low slung balladry of Cherished Moments, the upbeat and joyful House of Fire, the set rounding out on the furtively strident Wahoo!, closing on the emboldened mid-tempo jam Indy Blues. ~ Anne Carlini, Exclusive Magazine)
Wes 101 is Kristen R. Bromley’s heartfelt homage to the legendary Wes Montgomery, showcasing her distinctive voice as both guitarist and composer. Joined by Melanie Shore on organ, David Ian Baker on bass, and Matt Coleman on drums, the album is anchored by Bromley’s original tunes, which draw inspiration from Montgomery’s work while infusing them with her creative flair. The ensemble’s synergy is evident throughout the album, with each musician contributing to this wonderfully engaging listening experience. ~ Glenn Daniels, theJazzPage
This is the third album that I’ve taken in from guitarist Kristen R. Bromley, and each one makes me wish she lived closer to LA so I could see her in some club. Here, she’s in a organ-based quartet with Melanie Shore/org, David Ian Baker/b and Matt Coleman/dr, and she’s gotten bit by the Wes Montgomery bug, for which there is no known cure. But she’s not an imitation of the famed guitarist, as her own compositions allow her own personality to come forth. In fact, there’s some fun Chet Aktins-ish picking on the fun shuffle of “Bring It On” and the easy glide around Coleman’s cymbals on “Swing It For The Maestro”. She boogaloos with Baker on the aptly titled title tune, and bounces on the fun Latin feel of “Wahoo!”. Shore wails on her intro to the strutting “Indy Blues” and joins in the staccato’d feel of the hard hitting “House of Fire”! She’s smokin’ at the quarter notes! ~ George Harris, Jazz Weekly
